Cedar Rapids is hilarious. A star studded cast usually detracts from a comedy but in this case it worked. The flick stars Ed Helms – who unfortunately plays a character too similar to “Andy” from The Office – but also features everyone from Stephen Root of Office Space fame to Sigourney Weaver, who at 61 was looking pretty hot. Other big names include John C. Reilly, Rob Corddry, Anne Heche, the dad in that 70s show, and Isaiah Whitlock, who plays State Sen. “Clay” Davis in The Wire. Stand-up comedian Mike Birbiglia also makes an appearance.
I had the pleasure of visiting Cedar Rapids back in January 2004 during the Democratic Presidential Primary and the movie definitely does the city (town?) justice. I love Cedar Rapids but that’s probably because it’s so different from where I grew up outside of Washington, D.C. Then again, that’s what this movie is all about and why it’s so funny. In this movie, Cedar Rapids is the “big city”.
