Goodbye 2010…hello 1991?

In case you haven’t been paying attention, the fashion and music trends in the last few years were basically a carbon copy of the 1980s. Whether you’re a prepster or a hipster, the music you’re listening to and the clothes you’re wearing are unoriginal.

From Wayfarers (including their neon knock offs) to Aviators, Keds to VANS, skinny jeans to khakis, synthesizers to neon Album covers, Gumbys to high top fades, it’s been done before. The question is, do high school and college kids even know this and b.) will this trend continue?

When I was in middle school and high school in the 90s, “Grunge” music and the lovely fashion that came with it went mainstream. Flannel shirts are already becoming ubiquitous and it won’t be long before you start seeing black jeans on every 20-something. Now, I know flannel shirts can be a staple of any winter wardrobe but this is different. You can find other signs of a return to the 90s among the preppy set with the return of the Rugby shirt. If not a good movie, “Love & Other Drugs” is a 2-hour commercial preview for the next decade in the fashion. It won’t be long before you see kids in jumpers, stoned washed jeans and girls wearings scrunchies. Yes, kids, this used to be cool.

However, I also remember that at the same time there were a lot of kids that were rockin’ bell bottoms and flowery shirts in a nod to the late 60s and early 70s. You could even make the argument that some of the 80s trends were borrowed from earlier decades, which begs the question, what was the last original decade?

To be fair, a lot of these trends are timeless. However, when so many people swear that they had been wearing something for years or that their stuff is better because it’s vintage (from Mom and Dad’s closet), it’s a little suspect.
